چکیده

Abstract Reported here are geological, geophysical, mineralogical, and geochemical data on a previously unknown trachyte-hosted rare earth element (REE)-Nb-Zr occurrence at Pennington Mountain in northern Maine, USA. This was newly discovered by regional multiparameter, airborne radiometric survey that revealed anomalously high equivalent Th (eTh) U (eU), confirmed detailed ground portable X-Ray fluorescence (pXRF) whole-rock analyses of representative rock samples. The mineralized area occurs within an elongate trachyte body (~1.2 km2) intrudes Ordovician volcanic rocks. Geologic constraints suggest the is also age. eastern lobe (~900 × ~400 m) pervasively brecciated with matrix containing seams, lenses, veinlets composed mainly potassium feldspar, albite, fine-grained zircon monazite. Barite locally abundant. Minor minerals include columbite, bastnäsite, euxenite, chlorite, pyrite, sphalerite, magnetite. pXRF 22 samples (App. Table A1) collected from demonstrate this entire part highly mineralized. Whole-rock for document average contents Zr (1.17 wt %), Nb (1,656 ppm), Ba (3,132 Y (1,140 Hf (324 Ta (122 (124 (36.5 Zn (689 Sn (106 ppm). Among light REE, highest concentrations shown La (763 ppm) Ce (1,479 For heavy REE (HREE), Dy Er most abundant (167 114 ppm, respectively). No HREE-rich such as xenotime have been identified; HREE may reside chiefly monazite zircon. Very strong positive correlations (R2) 0.92 to 0.98 exist between Zr, Nb, Y, Ce, Yb, Sn, indicating eTh valid proxies these metals Trachyte-hosted REE-Nb-Zr deposits like known Australia south Qinling belt Central China. Based comparisons deposits, lack geologic mapping region, we other rare-metal occurrences contained elsewhere more widely Appalachian-Caledonian orogen where subvolcanic trachytes recognized.

Narsarsukite: a new occurrence in peralkaline trachyte, south Greenland

A flinty, spherulitic dyke of peralkaiine trachyte in a Precambrian dyke-swarm consists mainly of albite and aegirine. Within this, euhedral crystals of narsarsukite, NadTi,Fe)Si401o(F), occur as short prisms elongate parallel to c. This distinguishes them from all previously described narsarsukites, which have tabular habits. Minor phases present include micas, apatite, quartz, pectolite, nord...

Overland Flow Using Rare Earth Element

14 15 Rare earth element oxides (REOs) have excellent potential for use as tracers in 16 erosion studies. Using laboratory and field experiments we aimed to develop and test 17 a simple application method for spreading REOs and to use REOs to determine the 18 source of sediment to concentrated overland flow paths. 19 Tracks left by farm machinery (tramlines) in fields act as concentrated flow 2...

Canada lynx Lynx canadensis habitat and forest succession in northern Maine, USA

The contiguous United States population of Canada lynx Lynx canadensis was listed as threatened in 2000. The long-term viability of lynx populations at the southern edge of their geographic range has been hypothesized to be dependent on old growth forests; however, lynx are a specialist predator on snowshoe hare Lepus americanus, a species associated with early-successional forests. To quantify...

Contamination in the Rare-Earth Element Orthophosphate Reference Samples

Several of the fourteen rare-earth element (plus Sc and Y) orthophosphate standards grown at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in the 1980s and widely distributed by the Smithsonian Institution's Department of Mineral Sciences, are significantly contaminated by Pb. The origin of this impurity is the Pb2P2O7 flux that is derived from the thermal decomposition of PbHPO4. The lead pyrophosphate flux i...

EXAFS study of rare-earth element coordination in calcite

Extended X-ray absorption fine-structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy is used to characterize the local coordination of selected rare-earth elements (Nd , Sm , Dy , Yb ) coprecipitated with calcite in minor concentrations from room-temperature aqueous solutions. Fitting results confirm substitution in the Ca site, but first-shell Nd-O and Sm-O distances are longer than the Ca-O distance in calcite and ...
